World Art Camp

Each week, a different part of the world is explored as campers immerse themselves in the folk tales, music, food, and artistic styles of Africa, Mexico, India, and Japan.

ART OF AFRICA
Projects include jewelry making based on African style beading, mud cloth, and hand sewn, beaded, soft-sculpture dolls. The natural headdress and face paint of the Omo will also be featured.

ART OF MEXICO
Campers will create pieces inspired by the vibrant art of the Huichol, Mayan, and Aztec Indians. Projects include metal craft, milagros, calavera drawings, and papel picado. Contemporary Mexican art will also be introduced.

ART FROM INDIA
Henna art, kolam and rangoli designs, miniature paintings, and puppets from the Ramayana are a few of the projects that campers will create as they observe the ornate and colorful folk art of India. Bhangra dance and music will be enjoyed as will visits to Indian restaurants and shops.

ART OF JAPAN
Classical Japanese art forms such as brush painting, ikebana, and kirigami will be explored alongside more contemporary art forms such as anime, magna, and kyuuto style characters.

SILKSCREEN WORKSHOP
Campers will experience a variety of silkscreen methods as they print hand cut designs to create original t-shirts and posters. Without question, one of our most popular camps!

FOR THE LOVE OF ART CAMP
Art making is a much loved activity of childhood. During this new camp week, young artists will expand their natural love of art by experimenting with a number of multi-media techniques from photo transfer and collage to print-making and drawing and painting with non-traditional tools.

EXPLORING WATERCOLOR, INK, AND GOUACHE
Sometimes considered the most challenging of art techniques, watercolor painting is nonetheless a favorite amoung artists and art lovers. In addition to watercolor, young artists will learn how to draw with ink and paint with gouache (the opaque form of watercolor) as they spend their days combining, layering, and exploring the particular beauty of this unique media.

MINI MURAL CAMP
Art is not always made in the studio or meant to hang in a gallery. Throughout the week, our young artists will learn about the history of mural and street art while they work to make a vivid, mural-inspired painting of their own.

DRAWING EXPANSION DROP-IN**
Campers will learn to draw using all their senses as they draw. They will cultivate ways of seeing which open them to a more expressive use of line, form, value, and color. Drawings will be made using a variety of techniques, and children will combine media to create depth and dynamism in their work.

** Drawing Expansion Drop-in days are $90 per day. No minimum days. Come for one or all three.

CIT PROGRAM

For campers 12 to 14 years

CITs do most, if not all of the art projects. They are responsible to prepare/clean-up snack, play games with the younger campers at lunch and breaks and help clean-up in general. There is space for four CITs per camp week. CITs often go on to becoming paid camp assistants once in high school. The cost for our CIT Program is $285 per week. Please contact us at swaywestside@gmail.com to apply.
